01 — The Practice

Color is not a decoration. It is the subject.

The work begins with pigment, heat, and the long afternoon, and ends when the painting refuses to cool down.

Pigment

Hand-mixed oil paint on raw linen. Iron oxide, cadmium, burnt sienna, the occasional fat streak of cobalt to make the warms sing louder.

Process

Built in thick, fast layers. A painting lives or dies in its first hour. After that it is only argument and repair, color asking color to step aside.

Place

A converted shade-structure in the high desert. Ninety minutes from the nearest town, one good window, and the heat doing half the work.
